City of Buda Employee Spotlight Video - Vicki Fuchs, HR Director
“I moved to the state of Texas about four years ago and what attracted met to the City of Buda is I came from a small town called Frederick, Maryland. I love Buda because it reminded me of Frederick and the Hill County.
Vicki Fuchs has served as the City of Buda’s HR Director for about two years. When she’s not in the office you can catch her on the open road.
“I enjoy riding my bike. Every Saturday morning you can find me riding with the Buda Bike Shop. We have a good group of people from the community that ride every Saturday morning. It’s one of the things I enjoyed about this area because it’s very lovely."
Buda’s proximity to Austin and its small-town feel are a big attraction for new employees. For Vicki, it’s also important to point out to prospective employees, that they will have a lot of opportunity here.
“The City has a lot of versatility. Being in a smaller city you get to do multiple things. It’s just not you do this one task day in and day out. You get to expand and look at other departments. You can go down and learning form the planning department or engineering. It’s important to know what all of our employees do. I get a sense or feel with what they are confronted with on a daily basis and what kind of obstacles could be in their way. It also opens up the communication so that they feel comfortable coming to talk to me about issues or problems that they may have in the job or out in the field.”
“My day to day activities are never the same. You can come in with a schedule, but things change depending on an employees’ needs. A day could be meetings, it could be working with employees, it could be discussing their career growth, it could be talking about a legal situation or it could be about their benefits.”
For Vicki, helping an employee achieve their career goals is the rewarding part of her job.
“What do they need to do? Do they need to get a license? Do they need to get a certification? Do they need to go back to college? Most of the times it’s just about a getting a certification. I help them go through that and look at local areas where they can benefit.”
“We do quarterly employee meetings where we look at spotlight awards, where we recognize employees that have done something wonderful, whether it’s for the City or working with the community. And we have an Employee of the Quarter award and at the end of the year we do an Employee of the Year award.”
At the end of the day, it’s about striving to meet the City’s core values, which are integrity, innovative and resourceful, respectful and conscientious and dedication.
“We look for those core values as well when we do hiring and recruiting of people throughout the City of Buda.”
