Every year, a huge family reunion happens in Buda. The Harper, Hobby, Fields, Taylor, Kavanaugh, and Bunton families have significant history in Buda.
“There was a lot of us. We all stuck together and took care of each other and had fun together,” said Daniel Nelson.
Daniel Nelson’s roots run deep in Buda. His family are descendants of the Antioch Colony’s early settlers. The Antioch Colony dates back to the 1860’s. It was a rural farming community formed during reconstruction by a group of freed slaves.
Daniel’s Mother, Minnie Nelson, and other family members still live in the Antioch Community, located just off of Old Black Colony Road.
“It has a lot history there. A lot of people don’t know about the Antioch Site. I have an aunt here who is 96-years-old and she could tell them everything they want to know.”
From Texas and around the country, the family reunites every year here in Buda. The tradition was started by Daniel’s Grandfather, George Harper.
“Well my grandfather he started it. When he started it, it was three days. It was Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Then it dwindled down after he passed. It was always his tradition to keep having hit. We knew that we had other family out there and so they came together. So now we are going to keep it going.”
The reunion includes the Harper, Hobby, Fields, Taylor, Kavanaugh, and Bunton families. Their unbreakable bond is reminder to never forget where you came from. For Daniel one thing always stands out about his family.
“The love that they had and still have.”
