“ I think that there is power in a group of women.”
Sarah Ashlock created the "Ladies of Buda" facebook page to bring women together.
“Feeling connected to where you live is extremely important to your mental health, your well-being. I just casually created this facebook group and did not advertise it and people found it someway," said Ashlock.
Now the group is about 1000 members strong.
“Over the course of the last couple of years I have been involved in it and been in Buda, I am shocked at how many women own businesses here.”
Sarah, a freelance writer for Austin Woman Magazine, featured the Buda Mill and Grain in one of her articles.
“I also write daily for their sister company 'On The dot', which is a woman’s empowerment organization. Basically I highlight a woman every day who is doing amazing things in her career, whether it is as a CEO or one woman show.”
The idea behind Ladies of Buda is simple, but impactful….
“I was thinking about what I want Ladies of Buda to be and I just thought about a church. People come together every Sunday and they see the same faces and they catch up about how their kids are, how their businesses are going, or how they are feeling. I want Ladies of Buda to be that space for people.”
She also wants the group to help make a difference in the community. Recently Sarah hosted a co-ed Ugly Holiday Sweater Party to raise proceeds for the Hays-Caldwell Women’s Center. She says heading into 2019, the Ladies of Buda will continue to find ways to contribute to the community and have fun.
“As silly as it sounds, it does take a village. When you move here from somewhere else, it’s hard to find that village. If you have babies it’s even hard to get out of the house and find the group that will take you as you are. My focus for the group is to foster a sense of come as you are. We’re all hot messes in some way and that is okay. You don’t have to be a perfect woman to get it done.”
