Using a rain barrel to collect rainwater for your landscaping is beneficial in a number of ways.

  • Plants benefit from natural rainwater over tap water.
  • Save money! Using rainwater reduces your water utility bill.
  • Using rainwater instead of rainwater preserves water in our aquifers.
  • Reduce storm water run-off.

Why is the City offering a rebate on a rain barrels?

With increasingly unpredictable weather patterns, the necessity for water conservation is becoming a permanent mindset for most Central Texans.  Collecting rainwater and storing it for future use during dry times is a great way to practice water conservation.  One of the easiest and least expensive methods for homeowners to begin collecting rainwater is to install rain barrels at their residence.  The barrels are small enough and manageable enough to provide an entry level experience into rainwater harvesting.  The collected rainwater is water ideal for gravity irrigating small landscaping installations in close proximity of the rain barrel.

Who is eligible for the rain barrel rebate?

Any resident of Buda may purchase a rain barrel through this program.  However, only Buda residents that receive water service from the City of Buda and are current on all bill payments are eligible to receive a rebate.

How do I know if my water is provided by the City of Buda?

Your monthly utility bill will include separate charges for all city services provided by the city.  Please verify that you are billed for both water and wastewater on your city utility bill.  If you need help determining if you are a City of Buda water customer, please call 512-295-8845.

I receive wastewater services, but not water services from the City of Buda.  Why am I not eligible for the rain barrel rebate?

This rebate program uses funds specifically allocated for water conservation programming, therefore the rebate is only available to residents that receive water service from Buda.

Where do I get the rain barrels from?  How much do they cost?

The City has partnered with Poly-Mart in Austin, Texas to make rain barrels available.  Through this partnership, three styles of barrels are available:

50 gallon SpringSaver Barrel ($59.99 to $64.99)

54 gallon RainSaver Barrel ($84.99)

100 Gallon Rainharvesting Tank ($164.95)

Who installs the rain barrels?

The purchaser assumes all responsibility and liability for transporting, installing, and maintaining the rain barrel or storage tank.  Rain barrel installation should be for irrigation purposes only, and should not be used for potable (drinking) water.

I am a City of Buda water customer and I already have rain barrel installed.  Am I eligible for a rebate?

No.  The rebate program is not retroactive.  Rebates are only good for equipment purchased on or after June 1, 2016.

Do I have to buy a rain barrel from Poly-Mart/cityrainbarrelprogram.org to receive a rebate?

  • The equipment purchased must be manufactured and sold as a rain barrel, expressly designed for capturing rain water.
  • Converted trash cans, food barrels or other containers do not qualify for a rebate.
  • The rain barrel/storage tank must have appropriate mesh screening to prevent mosquitoes from accessing and breeding in the stored water.
