Since opening Tejas Birria in 2020, Alex and Mary Hernandez have aimed to spread their Hispanic culture through family recipes and hospitality.
The family-owned business offers a menu inspired by Oaxacan roots with a Texas twist, which includes Tijuana-style birria de res.
"What pulls at our heartstrings is sharing our culture through [these] recipes, but also bringing back memories from our [customer's] culture," Mary said, explaining, knowing we are able to provide that to them is special.
Alex has nine years of culinary experience working with a mix of Asian and Mexican cuisine. Mary's background in banking and Alex's expertise paved the way for their emphasis on providing hospitality and customer service to their customers as small business owners.
Tejas Birria is located on the east side of Buda at 2775 FM 2001. Alex added that being situated on the east side of Buda was something he had always planned to do.
"One of the main things for me was staying in the Buda's ETJ, on the east side, because I noticed a lot of Latinos in this area, and I felt like there was a lot more awareness that needed to be brought to this side of town," Alex said. "We want to bring more people out here. As we grow, we want to grow our community and surrounding area with us."
Alex and Mary also participate in food drives and other charitable events in the community to bring awareness of their culture, community and business. As they put it, "They are not in the food industry. They are in the people industry."
