Wastewater Department

Overview

The City of Buda's Wastewater Department is currently made up of six employees which oversee the operation and maintenance of the wastewater collection system. This system includes lift stations, gravity lines, force mains, and manholes.

Buda Wastewater Treatment Plant

The City of Buda Wastewater Treatment Plant has a current capacity of 1.75 million gallons per day and discharges into the Plum Creek watershed. Construction to double the plant's capacity to 3.5 million gallons per day will commence in 2019. The operation and maintenance of the plant is currently contracted out to the Guadalupe Blanco River Authority (GBRA). The wastewater treatment plant is an activated sludge plant with effluent chlorination. It utilizes aerobic sludge digestion with a dewatering press and the remaining solids are disposed of by hauling to a landfill.

Remember to be Cautious

Remember to be cautious about what you put down the drain or into toilets. Household items such as rags and wipes can travel down the mains to a lift station and cause severe damage to the pumps. Grease hardens as it cools when poured down a drain, even when mixed with hot water. The grease separates out and settles in plumbing systems and sewer lines. Pouring grease down your kitchen sink can cost the city thousands of dollars per year to maintain the wastewater system. It is very important that all fats, oils, greases (FOG) are poured into a container for disposal. FOG Brochure

Down the Drain Don’ts

Certain items disposed of in drains or toilets can cause problems in your sewer system. Some of these items are hazardous household chemicals such as gas, oil, paint, etc. and other items such as rags and wipes. These items can cause severe damage to the collection system, and cost you money in the form of repairs that the city has to make.

The following list includes some of the repairs that the city may encounter:
  • Crane truck rental to pull and clean pumps
  • Higher electric cost
  • Overflow or backup which is bad for the environment
  • Pump failure which leads to rebuild or replacement of pumps
  • Reduced pump efficiency
Please don’t cover up the sewer clean out in your yard or property with plants or landscaping, as this is our entry point to inspect and clean out the sewer system.
